FAVORITES
SPORTS TO PLAY: At 16, I was offered a tryout with the (then) St. Louis Browns baseball team. But, in those days you had to pay your own way to training camp. Because they couldn't afford the fare, it was declined. Love playing golf and drag racing for charity events.

I CONSIDER MY GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT TO BE...
Being the FIRST Country entertainer to act as a National Ambassador for U.N.I.C.E.F.; to guest host Johnny Carson's TONIGHT SHOW; to be enshrined in the prestigious Movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park, CA.; to headline the renowned Montreux Int.'l Jazz Fest.; one of the few country artists to headline and sell out Carnegie Hall; first country artist to headline the MIDEM convention in Cannes, France (the world's largest annual gathering of music industry execs.); one of the few country artists to ever receive a 5-Star album rating from the all-jazz periodical, DOWNBEAT.; one of the first country artists to ever play (and turn away over 1,000) at Madison Square Garden, NYC, NY.; one of the first to begin major tv guest spots abroad (i.e.-the Tom Jones Show from London'69); and to be inducted into the Las Vegas Entertainer's Hall of Fame (also a charter member).

I CONSIDER MY GREATEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT TO BE...
Some of my most proud achievements are Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters-John Brown University; also, the same honor from Baker University; Oklahoma's Ambassador of Goodwill; CMA's International Friendship Ambassador; Receiving my "Star" placed in the Hollywood Blvd.'s Walk of Fame (TV category); Skiatook, Oklahoma airport is named for me; Feb. 16, 1980-the first native son ever honored on one day by every governing body of one state-Virginia.; Inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in November 16, 1982; Gibson Guitar Hall of Fame '82; and the visiting artist in residence at Longwood College in Farmville, Va.
